It commemorates the early days of the town of San Diego and includes many historic buildings from the period 1820 to 1870. The park was established in 1968. In 2005 and 2006, California State Parks listed Old Town San Diego as the most visited state park in California.
The tiny town that began at the foot of Presidio Hill as an overflow from the garrison grew and prospered as the tide of immigration into California increased. Old Town became a state historic park in 1968, when work was begun to restore and stabilize many of the buildings in area. Since 1846, the American flag has flown over the plaza on Washington Square. None of the buildings in Old Town are in their original condition, but several have been restored, most of them open to the public.
