Ellen Browning Scripps, who lived here from 1897 to 1932, was, with her brother E.W.Scripps, a major benefactor of the area. The park named in her honor lies to the west of the caves. The La Jolla Museum of Contemporary Art on Prospect Street is in the extensively remodeled house where Miss Scripps lived in her last years. The Scripps Institute of Oceanography, north along the coast, was founded in 1903 and in 1912 became a part of the University of California.
Further north, the Salk Institute for Biological Studies was founded in 1961 by Dr.Jonas Salk with support from the March of Dimes National Foundation. It overlooks the ocean at 11010 North Torrey Pines Road. The uplands just east of the Salk Institute were a U.S Marines training base, Camp Calvin B.Matthews, from 1917 to 1964. The expanding University of California took over the site in 1964, and today it is the San Diego campus of the university.
