El Cajon Movers
El Cajon (pronounced /ɛlkəˈhoʊn/; Spanish: [elkaˈxon]) is a city in San Diego County, California. The population was 94,869 at the 2000 census. Nestled in a valley surrounded by mountains, the city has acquired the nickname of “The Big Box”. Its name originated similarly, from the Spanish phrase “el cajón”, which means “the big box” or “the drawer”.
El Cajon is located on the Rancho El Cajon Mexican land grant made in 1845 to María Antonia Estudillo, wife of Miguel Pedrorena. El Cajon was incorporated as a city in 1912.
The first commercial building in El Cajon Valley went up in 1876; this was Knox’s Hotel, the project of Amaziah Knox, originally an employee of Isaac Lankershim, who owned the former Rancho El Cajon property in 1869. The two-story building now stands at the corner of Park and Magnolia streets; the exterior is maintained by the City of El Cajon and the interior by the El Cajon Historical Society. Its focus is on the life of what has been until recently an agricultural community. Another museum in El Cajon is located on the campus of Cuyamaca College; this is the Heritage of the Americas Museum, and its coverage extends far beyond the boundaries of California.
