At the lower end of the Arroyo Grande Valley was Rancho Pismo, two leagues granted to Jose Ortega in 1840. This was purchased by Isaak Sparks, who resold it, half to Jonh M.Price and half to Branch. To add further to his possessions, Branch bought a part of Rancho Bolsa de Chamisal adjoining the Pismo on the south and a tract of land, Rancho Huerhuero, lying several miles to the north of his earlier holdings in the vicinity of the present town of Creston.
