Atascadero movers
Rancho Atascadro, granted to Trifon Garcia in 1842, and Rancho Asuncion, granted to Pedro Estrada in 1845, both of which lay between Ranchos Paso de Robles and Santa Margarita, became parts of the huge Murphy estate, with headquarters at Santa Margarita. The adobe house in which Pedro Estrada lived on Rancho Asuncion is now a fragmentary ruin about two miles out of Atascadero on Traffic Way, a section of old El Camino Real that was left out of the construction of US 101. After secularization, Rancho Santa Margarita passed from the control of Mission San Luis Obispo and was granted to Joaquin Estrada, the brother of Pedro. In 1860 Martin Murphy Jr., who lived at Rancho Pastoria de las Borregas in Santa Clara County, came into possession of Rancho Santa Margarita; this, together with Ranchos Atascadero and Asuncion and others that he owned, made up a magnificent landed estate totaling 70,000 acres. Martin Murphy’s son Patrick took charge of the entire domain, making Santa Margarita his home and his business headquarters. As late as the 1880s, thousands of beef cattle were pastured upon this vast territory.
