Arroyo Grande movers
Francis Ziba Branch, a native of New York, arrived in California with the Wolfskill party in 1831. For a few years he made his home at Santa Barbara, where he kept a store and boardinghouse, leaving occasionally to hunt sea otters. In 1835 he married Manuela, daughter of Zefarino Carlon, a soldier of the Santa Barbara company. In 1837 Branch received a grant of over sixteen thousand acres of land lying in the Arroyo Grande Valley about thirteen miles south of Mission San Luis Obispo, and named it Rancho Santa Manuela. When Branch moved to his rancho, he found that the valley in front of his home was an impenetrable swamp- a thicket of willow and cottonwood trees where bobcats, mountain lions, and grizzly bears lived. His stock was often attacked by wild animals and sometimes by the Tulare Indians from the east. Five years after Branch received his rancho, his father in law, Don Zefarino, obtained an adjoining grant of one square league named the Arroyo Grande and was later patented to his son-in-law.
