San Luis Obispo County is named for the Mission of San Luis, Obispo de Tolosa(St.Louis, Bishop of Toulouse). It is one of the original twenty-seven counties and was established on February 18, 1850. The city of San Luis Obispo, site of the mission, has always been the county seat. The Coast of San Luis Obispo County was first seen by explorers in 1542, but there is no evidence that the Cabrillo expedition landed at any point within the present county. At list two Manila galleon captains, however, paid brief visits. In 1857 Pedro de Unamuno brought his ship into Morro Bay and, according to Henry R.Wagner, penetrated inland about to the present city of San Luis Obispo. Possession was taken in the name of the King of Spain, and a cross was erected. The first Indians encountered by this party were extremely timid, but later the Spaniards were caught off guard by an Indian attack in which two man were killed and several others wounded. Eight years later Sebastian Rodrigues Cermeno , returning to Mexico in an open launch after the loss of hiss galeon San Agustin at what is today called Drakes Bay in Marin County, put in at San Luis Obispo Bay. The hungry crew traded with the Indians, who, they recorded, shouted “Cristianos” and “Mexico”, evidently memories of their contact with Unamuno. It is probable that Vizcaino, who named the Santa Lucia Mountains, entered the same bay in 1602.
