Montebello was originaly granted to Dona Casilda Soto in 1846. In 1850 she sold the ranch and her adobe house to William Workman, who in 1851 gave it to his son-in-law, Francisco Temple, and Juan Sanchez. Montebello is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States, in the southwestern part of the San Gabriel Valley. It is located on 8.4 sq mi of land just 8 mi east of downtown Los Angeles. It is considered part of the Gateway Cities, Gateway Cities and the city is a member of the Gateway Cities Council of Governments. The name, Montebello, means “beautiful mountain” in both Italian and Spanish. In the early 1900s, Montebello was a known source for oil springs. According to the 2007 US Census, the total population of Montebello is 63,957 people.
