Kings County movers, AZmovingProsKings County was named for the river called El Rio de los Santos Reyes, after the Three Wise Men of the Bible, by a Spanish  explorer, probably Gabriel Moraga, in 1805. At the time of the American conquest, the name was changed to King River. In 1893 Kings County was organized from territory split off from adjoining Tulare County. Two small additions from Frezno County were made in 1909. Hanford has always been the county seat. Dr. Lavern Lee Moore proposed that a post office should be established at the small agricultural community of La Tache, which was growing up north of  Tulare Lake. The Post office Department approved his request in September 1875, but gave the new office a name coined from that of the petitioner. Two yeas later the center of population moved a short distance to the branch railroad built through the area  and across the Kings River to the Huron plains and the important sheep-shearing center at Posa Chine trading post. In 1890 Lemoore was considered to be the largest wool-shipping center in the United States. The older, pre-railroad crossing of the river to the west side was at  what is still called Murphys Bridge, one-quarter mile south of Jackson Avenue. The same branch railroad gave birth in 1877 to Hanford, named for James M. Hanford, a Southern Pacific official, and destined to become the county seat when Kings County was formed. The town’s wooden buildings were frequently destroyed by fire; in 1887 the town’s first brick building was put up. It still stands at 110-112 East Sixth Street, in the historic district of Hanford. The city boasted one of the largest Chinatowns in California for some years, with as many as 600 residents. A street known as China Alley remains, and on it is a Taosist temple dating from 1893.
