Kern County moving company, AZmovingProsKern county was organized in 1866 from parts of Los Angeles and Tulare Counties. In 1845-46 an expedition into this region was led by Jonh C.Fremont. Edward Meyer Kern, an artist from Philadelhia, was the companys topographer, and nearly drowned while crossing a great stream. Fremont named the river for his colleague. Kern died at the age of forty, two years before his name was given to Californias third-largest county. The first county seat was located at Havilah in the mountains. Bakersfield, with a more central locatoin, replaced it in 1874. The oldest known residence in Kern County is the Glennville Adobe. It was built by Thomas Fitzgerald. Keyesville was the scene of gambling dens and gunmen as wild as in any of the larger camps in the north.  Thomas Baker was born in Muskingum, Ohio, in 1810, the son of a soldier in War of 1812 and granson of a Revolutionary War colonel. Baker himself was made a colonel in the Ohio State Militia when he was nineteen and, having completed his legal studies, was admitted to the Ohio bar. Alexis Godey, explorer with the Fremont expeditions, made his last home in Bakersfield, having acquired about sixty-six acres there in 1873. He disposed of much of this land but retained a favorite spot of high ground as his home. The site, facing Nineteenth Street, is now occupied partly by Central Park and partly by business and residential property.
