Fresno, CA AZmovingpros At certain times of the year, and particularity in years of heavy rain and flooding, many of which occurred in the years after the declaration of statehood in 1850, the San Joaquin River could be navigated far into the valley by vessels of very shallow draft.

Fresno city was established about 1858 at the head of navigation of Fresno Slough, sometimes called the South or Fresno branch of the  San Joaquin River. A pier was built for unloading freight from flatboats and barges. There were a few warehouses, several homes, and a hotel, the Casa Blanca, something of a landmark on the west side until it was destroyed by fire.

Fresno city was expected to become an important town because of its steamboat commerce, its station on the Butterflied  line, and its location on the transcontinental telegraph line being built through the San Joaquin Valley. The expectation was not fulfilled, and Fresno City had been abandoned by the end of the Civil War. The name Fresno was given to another settlement, one that had much less promise but, as it turned out, a far great future. The site of Fresno City is marked near the present town of Tranquillity, at SR180 and James Road.
