The county seat was first at Hamilton; in 1853 it was moved to Bid-well’s Bar. Since 1856, it has been in Oroville . “Butte” was used by early pioneers to name a high place, a mountain, or even a range of mountains. The “butte” in this name came from the Sutter Buttes, high hills to the south, now in Sutter County.
