Sutter Creek(SR L 322) was named for John A. Sutter, who mined there with his Kanaka workforce in the summer of 1848. There was little activity at Sutter Creek until 1851, when quartz gold was discovered. Quartz mining was a very hazardous occupation in the early days. Timbering of shafts and tunnels was all too often inadequate and poorly constructed, resulting in many cave-ins. Large amounts of capital were needed to construct these shafts and tunnels before any return could be made from the project. Alvinza Hayward was one of the few to make millions from his investments. Some properties were incredibly productive: the Central Eureka continued in operation even after most of the mines were closed down by World War 2. The shaft reached almost the 5,000-foot level and the mine produced about $17 million in gold.
