In the northern part of Amador County numerous mining camps were once located on the Cosumnes River and its branches. Most of these camps have long since vanished. The richest location in the district was situated on the river at the main forks of the Cosumnes, and was called by the Indian name Yeomet. Several stores and a somewhat pretentious hotel were standing there in 1853, but the miners gradually took over the town, one building after another giving way to the diggings, until nothing was left except the old toll bridge.

Plymouth is the home of the Amador County Fair. One feature of the fairgrounds is the historic Amador Sawmill, a steam-powered sawmill typical of those used from the 1850s to the 1940s. The mill operates on a contract basis and during the 4-day fair in July. The Amador Sawmill and Mining Association also maintains a replica of a mine headframe and a collection of historic mining artifacts adjacent to the sawmill.

Plymouth is at the western end of the Shenandoah Valley which is home to more than 45 wineries.
