The place began as an inn, the Pine Grove House, built in 1855 by Albert Leonard on the road between Volcano and Jackson. A restaurant now stands on the site of the inn. The town hall(1897), originally the Dance and Temperance Hall, has been the community center for over century. The public school built in the 1890s is now a small museum and open to the public.
