Amador City, a thriving community with many visitors, has a cluster of old buildings along SR49, most of which are still in use. A beautiful brick  building, the office and residence of former Keystone Mine superintendents, built in 1881, is now a motel with period furnishings.The  Amador Hotel, recently restored, includes some walls built in 1855; the Imperial Hotel, with a renowned dining room, dates from 1879. Since are fire in 1878 destroyed most of its wooden structures, the city’s older places are constructed of  brick. A building that escaped the fire is the old schoolhouse on the hill behind the cemetery, with its old bell in place in the belfry. Although it has never been a very populous place, Amador City has been an incorporated city since 1915, and was once the smallest incorporated city in California both in a population and in area.
