“In 1794,” Bancroft writer, “the eastern shores of San Francisco Bay was almost a tierra incognita to the Spaniards.” For nearly twenty years after the coming of Anza in 1776, there is no record of any exploring expedition until 1795, when Sergeant Pedro Amador visited the southern part of Alameda County some time before June. In his report, acknowledged by Governor Diego de Bonica, on June 2, 1795, Amador used the name of Alameda, the first known official use of that designation, for the creek, resembling a tree-lined roadway. “The Alameda” was again visited in November 1795, when, in accordance with the governor’s orders, Hermenegildo Sal And Father Antonio Danti set out from Monterey to search for suitable mission sites. In 1956, the new city of Fremont was created by joining together the towns of Mission San Jose, Centerville, Irvington, Niles, and Warm Springs. Its area of almost a hundred square miles make Fremont one of almost a hundred square miles makes Fremont one of the state’s largest municipalities.
