The coastal portions of Rancho San Antonio were largely untended until the late 1840s. Then came the American invasion following the discovery of gold. Three men who separately had sailed around the Horn were responsible for the beginnings of Oakland: Edson Adams, Andrew Moon, and Horace W.Carpentier. The latter was a sharp attorney, who after service in the California militia was known as General Carpentier. After a short time in the gold fields, the three determined to settle and lay out a town on the Contra Costa, the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay. In May 1850 they landed at what is now Jack London Square at the foot of Broadway in Oakland and built a cabin on Vicente Peralta’s property. Challenged by Peralta, they asserted that the land was public domain.
